The rapid urbanization and the global shift towards sustainable energy, brings with it; a growing demand for green hydrogen. The abundant renewable resources within Africa and in particular Lüderitz present vast opportunities for green hydrogen production and distribution, within the ambit of the Local Authority space. The Hydrogen Cities Workshop, held in Kenya from the 15th to the 17th April 2025 under the theme: “Hydrogen Cities: Value Chain Opportunities”, hosted by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) witnessed the congregation of various of Local Authorities to leverage these resources to feed and develop their own industries, developing further innovative local clusters and a hydrogen economy, that will create jobs and, drive economic growth while contributing to global climate goals. The workshop included case studies with a component of peer-to-peer networking where good practice examples and other pragmatic approaches to an integrated urban design and development that can be applied and adapted to different contexts, was shared amongst the municipalities present. The workshop included a site visit to a local Hydrogen Production Plant, where renewable energy is used to produce liquid ammonia for the production of fertilizer. The delegation form Council, included Members of the Management Committee Hon. Louisa T. Batromeus, Hon. Cllr. Anna-Marie Hartzenberg and the Public Relations Officer and the Council’s Innovation Champion Elwin !Gaoseb. The Connective Cities which includes, Naivasha County, Mombasa, Arandis, Lüderitz, Waterberg District Municipality, the South African Local Government Association, Mauritanian Local Authorities, will meet quarterly to further exchange on the co-creation of locally adapted solutions and plans to optimize on hydrogen opportunities.
