The town of Lüderitz has secured its largest foreign direct investment to the tune of €1.5 million (N$ 28 million) through VNG International an International Cooperation Agency of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities. The signing ceremony took place in Windhoek during the Namibia-EU Business Summit 2026 on the 13 May 2026, officiated by the Chairperson of the Management Committee Hon. Cllr. Ockert Theron assisted by the Acting Chief Executive Officer Mr. Otto Shipanga, witnessed by the Director-General of the National Planning Commission Amb. Kaire Mbuende and the European Ambassador to Namibia H.E. Ana Beatrix Martins. VNG International plans to launch a new European Union-funded project in partnership with the Lüderitz Town Council, co-financed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initiative, titled “Making Lüderitz Town Council Fit for the Future – A Thriving Hub for Green Hydrogen Production,” aims to help Lüderitz manage rapid growth linked to green hydrogen development. The project will address increasing pressure on infrastructure and public services such as water, electricity, waste management, healthcare, and education, while also helping manage potential social tensions caused by the influx of workers and investors. The project is envisaged to kick-start during the second quarter of 2026 and will run for a period of two and a half years.
