The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entered into between NamWater and Toyota Tsusho Corporation in November 2025 culminated in a working visit to Council on 19 May 2026. The Corporation, whose business segments include ( but are not limited to ) mobility, digital solutions, and green infrastructure, briefed Council on the ongoing feasibility study for the implementation of a desalination plant and photovoltaic energy facility.
The current water supply source is unable to adequately meet existing residential and industrial demand, particularly in light of the increasing water requirements of emerging industries. As a result, there is an urgent need to supplement the Koichab Water Scheme. Furthermore, the current water source is projected to sustainably support the town for only the next ten years under uninterrupted conditions.
At present, the town’s water output is limited to approximately 3,600 cubic metres per day due to constraints in distribution infrastructure and system capacity. In contrast, the envisaged project is expected to guarantee an output of approximately 100,000 cubic metres per day.
The feasibility study is anticipated to be finalised by February 2027, with permitting and construction activities expected to commence between 2028 and 2031. The project is aimed at addressing critical water shortages and ensuring sustainable water supply for residential, industrial, and green hydrogen development purposes.
The visiting delegation was received by Council’s political, administrative, and technical leadership. The visit concluded with a site inspection of the land allocated by Council to NamWater for the establishment of the desalination plant.
