The positioning of the town of Lüderitz as a strategic hub for Namibia’s industrialization ambitions, sets the tone for Council to internalize the expectations placed upon the institution to be a leader within the urban design and socio-economic development space. The achievement of the objectives requires broad-based consultations and high-level networking in order to assist Council to unlock investments within the “green economy” in Lüderitz, the sector is likely to compliment the country’s GDP by 32 percent and could add employment of 600 000 individuals. The recently concluded South Africa Green Hydrogen Summit held in Cape Town from the 12 – 13 June 2025, witnessed the congregation of government leaders, global investors and clean energy pioneers in attendance. Officiated by South African President His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, as he encouraged for regional infrastructure that supports green transition with the following remarks, ‘Green hydrogen is a way to marry Africa’s mineral riches with our renewable energy endowment to decarbonize heavy industries, to create jobs, to stimulate investment and to unlock inclusive growth across borders’. The Namibian President Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaiwah, was represented by the Director-General of the National Planning Commission Amb. Kaire Mbuende, that shared a high-level panel discussion with the South African Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr. Kgosientsho David Ramakgopa, touching on Namibia’s readiness in terms of infrastructure development to cater for the emergence of the just energy transition. Council accepted the invitation with the view of creating synergies for collaboration and investments within the green energy space in particular for the town of Lüderitz, Council during the Summit has unlocked further investment opportunities for the town, for its own green energy ambitions in addition to the plans set forth by Hyphen Hydrogen Energy. The delegation from Council was headed by the Deputy Chairperson and Mayor Hon. Cllr. Josephine Heita accompanied by the Chairperson of the Management Committee Hon. Cllr. Benjamin R. McKay and Members of the Management Committee Hon. Cllr’s Anna-Marie Hartzenberg and Lovisa Batromeus supported by the Public Relations Officer.
