The Vulnerability Mapping [VM] exercise conducted in partnership with the Lüderitz Town Council, GIZ Namibia-Integrated Urban Development in Lüderitz and Aus [ILA] and the City of Leipzig on the 08th August 2025 in the locality of Amilema was a resounding success. The participative engagement centered around community input, involving both a digital and walkable map through which members and the youth identified safe and unsafe spots, with the aim of addressing these shortcomings through a collective approach. The ambition to make Lüderitz a safe town to work and reside in, forms a crucial part of the town’s anticipated growth strategy. This VM is done to achieve just transition, guaranteeing all members of society are included through distributive justice that will ensure the benefits and burdens are shared fairly across all spectrums of the community. The town of Lüderitz is bound to experience an economic transition through the introduction of the “Green and Blue Economies” and it is the ambition of the Lüderitz Town Council to achieve sustainable urban development, that involves a holistic approach taking into consideration the social, economic and environmental dimensions of this change. The development partners are busy crafting a long-term vision for the Smart City of Lüderitz and within its urban design will incorporate features that will ensure the safety and well-being of all its community members, contributing to a productive workforce and thriving town.
